Project 3

Remodel Entire House

My client wanted to update the entire house and make more efficient use of the space. The house is a 2-story pole barn construction home. The main level contained the living room, dining room, small kitchen, laundry room, guest bedroom, guest bathroom, and master bedroom and bathroom (not a suite). The second floor contained a huge open space used as a game room, 2 bedrooms, and a large inefficient bathroom.

On the main level we moved the kitchen into the former dining room and dining room into the former kitchen. We condensed the utilities area and rearranged the orientation of the laundry room to make the room more efficient and to add more storage. We tiled the existing mud room shower and added a half bath. We added custom built lockers for the kids. We installed a custom built-in entertainment center in the living room and designed custom end tables. We added custom-built faux beams to add to the rustic theme. Custom built kitchen cabinets surround a huge island, which houses a microwave drawer. A custom built metal ventilation hood hangs over the stove. Granite countertops, backsplash, pot filler over the stove, and built-in door to pantry that stores a toaster were added. We also created a storage area for a small TV by designing a TV swing arm (thanks to the owner), which comes out of the side of the end cabinet. A custom-built bar cabinet houses a mini refrigerator.

We removed a full guest bathroom on the main level, as well as a guest bedroom, but added a half bathroom downstairs in the laundry room and added a full bathroom upstairs. In place of the guest bathroom, we expanded the master bathroom, and in place of the guest bedroom, we created an office.

The master bedroom closet was expanded into the previous foyer closet and custom shelves, drawers, nooks, and cubbies were designed to make the most efficient use of this space. Under the stairway we created a shoe cubby storage “door” on hinges, which can be opened to find more storage for items not often used, i.e., luggage.

On the second floor we rearranged all the walls to create 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, and an entertainment space. Two of the bedrooms surround a Jack-n-Jill bathroom. The entertainment space has a walk-out deck that overlooks the back yard.

An ingenious and artistic carpenter helped to create the rustic charm with his woodworking skills. We can see his work in the master suite bathroom custom-built medicine cabinet and mirror, the staircase railing, kitchen pantry shelving and door, master closet shelving and cubby, fireplace wood storage box, half bathroom wainscoting and shelving and livingroom faux beams.   A talented cabinet maker built all the cabinetry to our design specifications, including the kitchen, mini bar, entertainment unit, lockers, laundry cabinets and vanities.  He also built the livingroom end tables and diningroom mirrors.  Many thanks go to these terrific carpenters!

On the exterior, we added 2 dormers and a wraparound porch with stone and wood pillars. In the backyard, a pond and deck off the kitchen previously existed. The next summer, the client wanted to change the pond to a pool and create a larger outdoor entertainment space. We designed the space to include a pool, outdoor kitchen and bar, a fire pit and hot tub area.

Custom window treatments and blinds cover all new windows. Some of the client’s existing furniture was reused, and some new furniture was procured by the designer.
