Defined by Design is a boutique interior design firm founded by Shelly Fidler in 2014, focused on creating thoughtfully designed spaces that feel intentional, personal, and livable. Through a collaborative process, we design interiors that balance beauty, function, and authenticity—reflecting the people who live there.
With over 15 years of experience, we specialize in full-service residential design, approaching every project with an eye for balance, individuality, and longevity. From single-room updates to full-home transformations and outdoor living spaces, each project is designed to support how you live every day.

Full-Service Design
Comprehensive design management from initial concept to final reveal, for single rooms or entire homes. Services include space planning, cabinetry design, custom elements, finish and furniture selections, as well as vision boards, floor plans, furniture layouts, and 3D illustrations. Ideal for clients who want a seamless, guided experience from concept to completion.
Furniture & Decor Selection
From furniture to window treatments, artwork and accessories, we can select cohesive pieces that elevate your space. We can prepare a customized shopping plan for you to implement or we can handle sourcing for you. Our team also coordinates shipments, installations, and works with suppliers and trades to ensure a seamless process.
Consultations & Interior Refresh
One-time or ongoing sessions tailored to your needs. Services may include space planning, furniture layouts, lighting recommendations, paint guidance, or refreshing a room using your existing pieces and a few new additions.
Color & Material Consultation
Custom palettes for paint, stain, and interior finishes designed to ensure a cohesive balance throughout your home. Includes digital presentations to visualize cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes, flooring, and other materials.
Virtual Design (e-Design)
A complete design plan delivered remotely. Includes vision boards, floor plans, curated furnishings, and a shopping list – so you can implement the design on your own schedule. Perfect for clients outside of our area or those seeking flexible, independent installation.

Shelly Fidler
— Founder & Principal Designer
Shelly founded Defined by Design in 2014 after a 17 year career in environmental, safety and property management. Driven by a long-standing passion for design, she enrolled in a design program and earned an associate’s degree in Environmental Interior Design. This degree, combined with bachelor’s degrees in Environmental Studies and Biology, enables Shelly to bring a thoughtful, holistic perspective to every project—blending creativity with structure and intention.
At the heart of Shelly’s work is a deep appreciation for authenticity. She creates curated, modern yet approachable spaces that reflect each client’s story, character, and lifestyle. Each project is refined and timeless, designed to evolve with the people who call it home—creating spaces that feel meaningful, comfortable, and enduring.
Beyond design, Shelly is deeply invested in placemaking and community engagement. She serves on the Goshen Theater Board of Directors, the Arts & Exhibition Committee at Wellfield Botanical Gardens, and previously on the Boys & Girls Club of Elkhart County board. Shelly lives in Goshen, Indiana, with her family, where her love for community, creativity, and thoughtful design continues to shape her work.
Mindy Beyeler
— Design Assistant
Mindy’s career has always lived at the intersection of creativity, storytelling, and visual intuition. With a background spanning graphic design, brand development, and leading marketing for a major commercial real estate company, she brings a refined creative eye and an innate sense of style to every project.
As the Design Assistant at Defined by Design, Mindy plays a pivotal role in shaping the client experience. She specializes in creating mood boards, visual concepts, and inspired design direction that help clients instantly connect with the vision for their space. Her strength lies in seeing possibility — the mood, the palette, the textures, the energy — long before the first piece is installed.
Mindy loves crafting environments that feel elevated yet inviting, layered yet effortless. She believes design should create a feeling, an experience, and a sense of “this is exactly what I didn’t know I wanted.” Her creative instinct and ability to translate ideas into beautiful, cohesive visuals make her an essential part of every Defined by Design project.
